Ahmed Al-Maadheed x Splendore Unique: Ten Art Dials for the Rolex DateJust 41

Between August and September 2020, Splendore Unique and Qatari artist Ahmed Al-Maadheed released ten art dials for the Rolex DateJust 41, each carrying the strokes and textures of his original artwork.

Ahmed Al-Maadheed is a self-taught artist with a background in animation and graphic design, who signs his work AAM. His practice joins traditional Arabic calligraphy with modern illustration, in clean lines and balanced compositions.

In 2017 his portrait Tamim Al Majd, a silhouette of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani paired with Arabic calligraphy, became a national symbol of unity in Qatar, travelling from his own social media onto posters, flags and walls across the country.

From Canvas to Dial

The collaboration began with his paintings. Rather than redraw them, we precision printed each artwork onto the dial, so the brushstrokes and surface textures of the original carry through at the scale of the wrist.

Ahmed’s compositions often rest on a single outline or gesture, which is what made them read so clearly on a dial a few centimetres across.

The Ten Designs

Ten designs were released: Qatar, Home, Dignity, Superwoman, Respect, Reliable, Target, Intensity, Mechanism of Love and 5/6. Several speak directly of home: Home traces the Qatari peninsula in fine maroon line on a pale, softly textured ground, framed by expressive brushstrokes.

Each design was limited to fifty pieces, and every order counted towards that edition, whether the collector chose the dial alone or the complete watch.

“Not a copy of the painting, but the painting itself, brought to the scale of the wrist.”

Respect

Respect became the face of the collaboration, photographed beside the original painting it was taken from. Offered as a complete Rolex DateJust 41, it shows most clearly how the work moves from canvas to dial with its colour and gesture intact.

The Collaboration Today

Allocations for all ten designs are now closed, and every piece is in a collector’s hands. The collaboration remains one of the clearest expressions of what the Art Dial programme sets out to do: carry an artist’s own hand, and a nation’s pride, onto a watch worn every day.

Ahmed Al-Maadheed’s artist profile, with the full collection, is now part of our Artists archive.
