Biography
Born in Basra, Iraq, in 1974, Wissam Shawkat is a contemporary Arabic calligrapher renowned for creating his signature Al Wissam style. Blending traditional Arabic scripts with modern design, he uses handmade tools and classical techniques to produce bold, innovative works that redefine the boundaries of Arabic calligraphy.
The Art
For over 30 years, I have explored the boundaries of Arabic calligraphy by blending traditional techniques with contemporary artistic expression. My work transforms classical letterforms into abstract compositions while preserving the beauty and discipline of the craft.
Inspired by both Islamic calligraphic heritage and modern art movements such as Bauhaus, Geometric Abstraction, Futurism, and Cubism, I create works that celebrate the visual power of Arabic letters beyond their literal meaning.
